A Comparison of Flow Modification through Foundry Filters using both Water Modeling and Simulation Software -

Part1
By J.M. Dumaillet and G.M. Wilson
Saint-Gobain Advanced Ceramics Hamilton, Paris, Ontario, Canada

Copyright 2002 American Foundry Society

This study is the first part of a project beeing undertaken to establish
general rules for designing a gating system with a filter.
The considered parameters include : type of alloy, filter print, filter
location, filter orientation, angle between filter chamber and runner, runner
height and choke location.
Major observations were made using water modeling experiments, but
the use of simulation software is much quicker and more flexible,
and the results can be interpreted more clearly.
After suitable adjustments to the software parameters, most of the
observations became similar to those noted with water modeling.
However, air entrapment is more obvious in the water model and the low velocity
at the chamber exit is more visible in the software simulation.

Molten metal filters :an engineered balance - By I.A. Andrews and A.L. Matthews
Hamilton Advanced Ceramics, Paris, Ontario, Canada

Experience has shown that characteristics other than just filtration efficiency are important
properties of molten metal filters. The ability to remove inclusions is of course important,
but a filter must also have a high and consistent flow rate, good strength, a high capacity
and good dimensional accuracy. This must be achieved at the lowest possible cost.
The paper discusses the relative performance of the most popular filtering technologies
against each of the above parameters. The filters types considered are pressed cellular
ceramics filters, extruded cellular ceramics filters and ceramic foam filters.
The paper concludes that in ductile iron, ceramic pressed cellular filters offer the best
engineered balance of the performance parameters discussed.
